US backs Thai aid package

The United States has called on Thailand to continue with its reform programme if it is to restore international confidence in its economy.

The call was made by the US Treasury Secretary, Robert Rubin, after what he said was a very good ninety-minute meeting in Washington with his Thai counterpart, Tarrin Nimmanahaeminda.

Correspondents say Mr Rubin pointedly made no mention of Thailand being able to renegotiate the terms of the tough reform package imposed by the International Monetary Fund.

Mr Rubin said the Thai minister had underscored his country's commitment to a comprehensive programme of reform, including the restructuring of its banking sector.

But Mr Rubin also pledged continued US support for international aid to Thailand to help it reform its ailing economy.
