Uzbek women protest again
About forty Uzbek women have staged a protest in the capital, Tashkent, against the arrest of a supporter of the prominent Islamic leader, Obidkhon Nazarov. The women -- who're protesting outside a local police station -- said the supporter, Oqilkhan Ziyokhanov, was detained for his religious activities. The police have declined to comment. The women have accused the authorities of increasing their pressure on Islamic activists following last month's killing of several policemen in the city of Namangan. Last week, the women protested against a ban on the use of loudspeakers for the Muslim call to prayer. The BBC Central Asia correspondent -- who's in Namangan -- says the city is under curfew From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
