Australian gambling profits drop
The Australian government says gambling industry profits dropped by eighty-six percent last year. Government figures covering the period to June, show that the fall in casino profits was caused by a drop in revenue from gaming tables and an increase in the cost of labour. The data covers a period before the currency crisis in Asia, which is expected to reduce the number of big-money gamblers visiting Australian casinos. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
