Sri Lankan soldiers face prosecution

Ten Sri Lankan soldiers accused of the torture and killing of two Tamil men, are being handed to civil police.

The Defence Ministry said the two Tamils died during interrogation after being stopped at a checkpoint in the northern Jaffna peninsula.

The Defence Ministry said that those who'd questioned the men had violated official instructions.

They are expected to face prosecution.

Human rights campaigners in Sri Lanka have welcomed the arrests.

Hundreds of Tamils have disappeared since 1996 after being arrested in Jaffna.

The government has said it is trying to discover what happened to them.
