Israeli officers want West Bank troop withdrawals

More than a hundred Israeli reserve officers, including several generals, have appealed to the Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, to carry out troop withdrawals from the West Bank as agreed in earlier peace talks with the Palestinians.

Their open letter will be delivered to Mr Netanyahu in Washington before he meets President Clinton on Tuesday.

Correspondents say the letter recalls a similar appeal by Israeli officers twenty years ago to the then prime minister, Menachem Begin, at the time of peace talks with Egypt.

These ended with Israel and Egypt signing the Camp David peace agreement.
