Peterhansel finished 10th in the final stage of the race, a 265km stretch from Saint-Louis in Senegal, won by Spain's Jordi Arcarons.

Cyrille Neveu had previously won the motorcycle class of the Dakar rally five times.

Peterhansel drove a Yamaha in the long-haul competition and finished half an hour ahead of his nearest competitor overall.

Another Frenchman, Jean-Pierre Fontenay, scored a first success in the car rally.

Driving a Mitsubishi, he finished ahead of his team mates Kenjiro Shinozuka and Bruno Saby.
