Bomb attack on top Bulgarian daily

The Bulgarian Interior Minister Bogomil Bonev has said a bomb explosion outside the office of a leading daily newspaper was a terrorist act probably carried out by the mafia.

The device exploded late on Saturday at the headquarters of TRUD, the top-selling Bulgarian newspaper, smashing windows but causing no injuries.

Correspondents say TRUD has a reputation for investigative reporting on crime, and recent articles on the mafia may have provoked the attack.

On Monday, a Sofia court is due to begin scrutinizing a deal made last year which gave the controlling share in TRUD to a German newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung.
