Hutu rebel attack in Burundi
Reports from Burundi say Hutu rebels have attacked a northern suburb of the capital, Bujumbura. Military sources said the rebels launched a mortar attack on a military post at Gikongo, but were repulsed by the army. The army said last week that it had killed more than seventy Hutu rebels in clashes east of Bujumbura. The rebels say they are trying to force the Tutsi-led army to agree to negotiations on the return of multi-party democracy to Burundi. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
