Canadians still suffering effects of ice storm
Nearly three-quarters-of-a-million people in eastern Canada are still without power after an ice storm caused widespread disruption to electricity supplies almost two weeks ago. Power supply managers say it could be at least another week before a full service is restored. Canadian soldiers are helping workers repair fallen pylons and install hundreds of kilometres of new cable. The worst-affected area is Quebec, where more than two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand homes are still without electricity. At least twenty people have died since the ice storm struck on January-the-fifth. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
