Mexican drugs suspect sent to jail

A Mexican judge has sentenced the alleged leader of a drug cartel to two years in prison for illegal possession of firearms.

Justice authorities say the man, Oscar Malherbe, faces further charges of drug trafficking, criminal association and murder charges.

He was arrested in February last year after what officials called an intense manhunt.

He was allegedly in charge of the Gulf cocaine cartel based in the city of Matamorros, near the border with Texas.
