Montenegro police act to prevent repeat of demonstrations

The authorities in Montenegro have taken steps to prevent further disturbances in the capital, Podgorica, after Wednesday's trouble in which more than fifty people were injured.

Police entered cafes and other public buildings during the day, detaining people suspected of involvement in the protests by supporters of the outgoing president, Momir Bulatovic.

Border crossings from the Serb part of Bosnia were also closed to prevent Serbs sympathetic to the defeated president entering Montenegro.

The new president, Milo Djukanovic, was sworn into office on Thursday after defeating Mr Bulatovic in elections last October.

He won on a platform of securing greater recognition for Montenegro within the new Yugoslav federation.
