Tajik government and Islamic opposition still talking
The government in Tajikistan has defended its record on implementing the June peace agreement, which ended five years of civil war. It was replying to the Islamic opposition, which suspended its participation in the National Reconciliation Commission yesterday, complaining of lack of progress. The government said it, too, had grievances against the opposition and denied that it alone was to blame for the current breakdown. The BBC Central Asia corresponent says the government's tone was fairly conciliatory and that the two sides are still talking. The Tajik opposition leader, Said Abdullo Nuri, told journalists after a special meeting with senior government figures to discuss the crisis, that he was still committed to peace.
