Teenager appeals for help in finding missing parents

Two police officers pose as the Aitkens during the reconstruction

A teenager whose parents went missing a week before Christmas has appealed again for help in tracking them down.

Ann Marie Aitken, 19, was anxious when her parents failed to return to the Scottish village of Aberfoyle after a shopping trip on December 18 but did not contact the police until Boxing Day.

Her 13-year-old brother Roddy spent a miserable Christmas with his neighbours worrying about their parents, Roddy and Ann Marie.

Central Scotland Police have staged a reconstruction at the Asda supermarket in Bearsden near Glasgow in an attempt to jog the memories of people in the area.

Two police officers dressed as Mr and Mrs Aitken walked up and down the aisles of the supermarket in a bid to trace anyone who may have seen them on that day.

Twenty-mile journey home

They are believed to have left in their purple P-registered Vauxhall Astra for the 20-mile journey back to their home in Aberfoyle.

But they have not been seen since and Central Scotland Police admit they are now extremely worried about the couple's safety.

A search of the countryside, lochs and streams around the couple's home has drawn a blank.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Ogg, who is leading the investigation, said someone must have information which could help the police.

Complete mystery

He said: "In every missing person case we like to resolve it by finding the people safe and well but as time goes by we have got to look at other possibilities."

The car has not been found and there are no reports of it being involved in any accidents either in Scotland or further afield.

The police have the couple's passports - they were due to fly to Cyprus on Christmas Eve - but Interpol have also been contacted.

Central Scotland Police spokeswoman Janet Goodfellow said there was no criminal reason why the couple would have gone missing and added: "They were an ordinary couple and it's a complete mystery."
