Two militiamen die in East Timor ambush

The official Indonesian news agency, Antara, says two militiamen have been shot dead by guerrillas in East Timor.

It quotes the Indonesian military commander as saying the two were ambushed as they were escorting a village leader in Baucau district.

The village leader was not injured.

The two militiamen, both Timorese, were members of one of the groups given military training to assist the large Indonesian army garrison in East Timor.

Indonesia invaded the territory in 1975, later annexing it despite international condemnation.

Thousands of people have died in guerrilla resistance to the occupation which has continued ever since.
