Clinton suspends the full implementation of anti-Cuba legislation

The influential United States Senator, Jesse Helms, has reacted bitterly to the further suspension by President Clinton of the full implementation of legislation reinforcing the embargo against Cuba.

Mr Helms -- one of the authors of the Helms-Burton Law -- accused the president of abetting profiteers who were, as he put it, propping up the Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

President Clinton's decision froze -- for the fourth time -- a clause allowing US citizens to sue companies using property confiscated by the Cuban govenment after the Revolution.

The provision has been strongly criticised by many of Washington's trading partners.
