Azeri politician accused of plotting terror attacks

The authorities in Azerbaijan have accused the former speaker of parliament, Rasul Guliyev, of plotting assassinations and terrorist attacks and misappropriating state funds.

A joint statement by the Interior and National Security Ministries said Mr Guliyev had held secret meetings abroad to discuss training assassins and forming terrorist groups.

Police are also reported to be investigating where he got his wealth.

Mr Guliyev resigned in 1996, citing health reasons, and now lives abroad.

He has denied the accusations.

Correspondents say although there is a continuing power struggle in Azeri politics, it is not clear why Mr Guliyev should be targetted now.
