Policeman arrested after cannabis haul
Ten people, including a policeman, have been arrested after cannabis worth £1m was seized by French and British customs officials.

John McAnenny, 47, an officer in a central England police force, was one of two men arrested on board a yacht in the French port of Calais.

Raids at 10 addresses around Britain led to seven men and a woman being detained.

All are linked to a cannabis smuggling network, which customs and police have spent four months investigating.

Operation code-name "Baskit," involved West Midlands Police, Britain's National Criminal Intelligence Service and French police.

Fifty British customs officers were also involved in the operation.

"West Midlands Police can confirm that a number of people have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling a large amount of cannabis," a Customs and Excise spokesman said.

"The police officer and another man are in custody in France and are being interviewed by French police. The drugs were destined for the UK but the boat was unable to sail due to adverse weather conditions," he said.

He added: "Included in those arrested was a West Midlands police officer. PC John McAnenny, 47, with 28 years' service and based at Birmingham's Steelhouse Lane police station, was arrested in Calais by the French police, along with another person."
