Indonesia agrees to revise economic reforms

Indonesia has agreed to carry out a revised programme of economic reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund.

Its promise to do so was a pre-condition for IMF support for the ailing Indonesia economy.

The agreement was signed in Jakarta by President Suharto in the presence of the head of the IMF, Michel Camdessus.

The deal was worked out during intensive talks over several days between IMF and Indonesian officials, but there are no details.

However, Mr Camdessus has said that Indonesia must speed up what he called long-overdue reforms in exchange for IMF economic assistance worth more than forty-billion dollars.
