Tim Henman is through to the quarter finals of the competition he won last year

British number two Tim Henman took just 28 minutes to complete a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Spaniard Albert Portas to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Sydney International.

Henman, the defending champion, was leading 7-6, 1-0 when their second round match was postponed by rain on Wednesday.

He was delighted to have sealed his victory in such convincing fashion on Thursday after several delays made it hard to keep concentration levels up.

"It was very difficult yesterday," he said. "It was stop-start all the time. It was good to finish the day a set and one-love up."

Henman said he was particularly happy with his serve and felt the performance bodes well for next week's Australian Open - the first grand slam tournament of the year.

He will now face either Spain's Francisco Clavet or the American Todd Martin in his quarter-final clash.

Henman, Spain's Albert Costa and US Open champion Pat Rafter are the only seeds left in the draw.
