S. Africa frees former Zairean generals

The South African High Court has released three senior generals from the former Zairean army, who fled their country after the fall of President Mobutu.

The three include a former defence minister, Mavua Mudima.

They were arrested last month for allegedly violating South Africa's immigration laws.

But the High Court freed them on bail, saying further detention was not warranted.

The Kinshasa government has requested their extradition on charges that they tried to oust President Mobutu's successor, Laurant Kabila.

But South Africa says there's no extradition treaty between the two countries.
