Thursday, January 15, 1998 Published at 04:01 GMT World: Africa Kaunda continues to defy Zambian government
The former president of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda -- who is challenging his house arrest for alleged involvement in a coup attempt last year -- has again called for new elections.
Speaking after a High Court hearing in a case he brought against the government, Mr Kaunda urged his supporters not to give up hope.
During the hearing, a Zambian army officer detained in connection with the coup attempt said he had implicated Mr Kaunda, because he had been tortured.
Making a public apology, the soldier, Captain Jackson Chiti, said he later withdrew his statement.
The state is expected to respond to the evidence later today.
