New Montenegro President sworn in

The new President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, has been formally sworn into office -- a day after clashes between police and his political opponents on the streets of the capital At the ceremony, Mr Djukanovic warned that the republic would only remain a part of the Yugoslav federation if it was given equal status with Serbia.

Correspondents say his comment is a challenge to the Yugoslav federal president, Slobodan Milosevic, who was a close ally of his predecessor, Momir Bulatovic.

Earlier, the United States accused Mr Milosevic of being behind the violent demonstration against President Djukanovic on Wednesday night.
