Fighting dies down around Burundi capital

Reports from Burundi say fighting in the hills around the capital, Bujumbura, which broke out on Saturday, has now died down.

The army said troops were patrolling the area east of the capital which was the main focus of the clashes, but most of the Hutu rebels had fled.

An army spokesman said yesterday government forces had lost four soldiers and killed seventy-two rebels.

However a spokesman for the main Hutu rebel movement, the CNDD, said up to fifty soldiers had been killed since Saturday.
