Indonesian opposition group nominates Suharto challenger

An opposition group in Indonesia has nominated the country's vice-president, Try Sutrisno, to be a candidate in presidential elections scheduled for March.

The move by the Unity of the National Brotherhood YKPK movement follows the decision of the ruling Golkar group to renominate President Suharto for a seventh term in office.

Correspondents in Indonesia say the nomination of a prominent figure within the political establishment to challenge President Suharto is unusual.

But they say it's highly unlikely that the Assembly which elects the president will choose a candidate who hasn't been nominated by Golkar.
