The trust expects 'a small number' of cancers to be found

Health officials from the Royal Hull Hospitals Trust in Humberside are recalling 1000 women for breast screening.

Ian Galloway, Hull Hospitals Trust: "We felt we should recall them to be absolutely certain." (Dur: 1' 59")
A routine inspection of 16,000 mammograms made by the Humberside Breast Screening Service between April 1995 and March 1996 has led to the recall.

Some X-rays from 1995 and 1996 did not meet quality control standards and were found to be "less that ideal" after double-checking.

Ian Galloway, of the Royal Hull Hospital and NHS Trust, said: "It's a precautionary measure as a result of a quality control audit."

Mr Galloway said that he did expect a small number of cancers to be found. The women concerned are being offered new screening tests.

The BBC's Siobhan Daniels: "Do you expect to detect any cancers?" (Dur: 3' 37")
It is hoped that the results of the re-screens will be available within 48 hours of the procedure.

The Royal Hull Hospitals Trust has set up a telephone helpline service run by qualified nurses for worried patients. The number is 0800 665544.
