Sixteen killed by police in India

Officials in India say at least sixteen people were killed when police fired on demonstrators in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The officials say the police opened fire when farmers who were demanding compensation for crop failure became violent during an election rally held by the Bahujan Samaj party in Multai on Monday.

The chief minister of the state, Digvijay Singh, said an indefinite curfew has been imposed in the area.
