Italian police intercept Kurdish immigrants

Police in Italy say they have detained more than one-hundred-and-sixty suspected illegal immigrants -- mostly Kurds from Turkey and Iraq.

They also included people from Albania.

Many were found in make-shift camps near the south-eastern port of Brindisi.

Coastguard officials say they also found about two-hundred-kilogrammes of marijuana.

More than one-thousand people -- mostly Kurds -- have arrived in Italy over the past month, and last week police chiefs from European Union countries and Turkey agreed a series of measures to stem the influx.
