Somali clan threatens retaliation after arrest of a Somali in Rome

A Somali clan has threatened to retaliate against Italians after the arrest in Rome on Wednesday night of one of their members on suspicion of murdering two Italian journalists in Mogadishu in 1994.

The man, Hashi Omar Hassan, flew to Rome at the invitation of the Italian government to give evidence in an investigation on alleged torture in Somalia by Italian troops in 1993.

Elders of Mr Hassan's Abgal clan in northern Mogadishu say he is innocent and have warned that they will taken action unless he is released.
