French honour author of famous French article

Tributes have been paid to the French writer Emile Zola on the 100th anniversary of his famous letter in which he accused France's military authorities of having wrongly prosecuted a Jewish army officer for spying.

At a special ceremony at the Pantheon in Paris, where the writer's ashes are buried, the Prime Minister, Lionel Jospin, said the letter, headed "J'Accuse", contained lessons about the dangers of anti-semitism that modern France must not forget.

Zola fled to London after being sentenced to jail for slandering the army; the Jewish officer, Alfred Dreyfus, spent four years in a penal colony, but was eventually rehabilitated
