Guyana court can't rule on opposition complaints

The Chief Justice in Guyana, Desiree Bernaud, has ruled that she has no jurisdiction to deal with a complaint by the main opposition party claiming electoral fraud in last month's general election.

The leader of the People's Progressive Party, Janet Jagan, was sworn in as president after the election, but the opposition People's National Party of Desmond Hoyte is attempting to have the results overturned.

There's been sporadic violence in Guyana since the vote, including a series of small bomb blasts.

The United States and Britain have warned their nationals to avoid travelling to Guyana unless their visit is essential.
