Street battles flare up again in northern Polish riot town

Clashes between youths and police broke out again in the centre of the northern Polish town of Slupsk, Polish radio reported on Monday night.

"A group of around 500 young people, who had been demonstrating relatively peacefully for several hours in the streets of the town, attacked an approaching police car," the radio said.

"Clashes started between the demonstrators and police when a police radio car came close to the group.

"Hooligans, threatening to lynch the policemen, tried to drag them out of the radio car. Their police colleagues rushed to their aid."

The radio described "clouds of tear gas" in the town centre, particularly near the railway station.

"A real battle is waging at several places in the town. The dispersed groups are moving from place to place. Young people predominate in the crowds of hooligans, but there is also a large group of children."

It said a train carrying protesters to the town had been stopped several kilometres away from the town.
