Two rebels killed in East Timor

The authorities in East Timor say that Indonesian troops have killed two East Timorese pro-independence rebels during a clash in the central district of Ermera on Friday.

The district mayor, Constantino Soares, said the two were shot dead during a battle between an Indonesian army unit and twenty-five members of the GPK group.

Pro-independence rebels have waged an armed campaign against the Indonesian occupation of East Timor since Indonesia invaded the territory in 1975.
