Indonesian ruling party backs Suharto

The governing party in Indonesia has confirmed that it will nominate President Suharto for a seventh term in office in elections scheduled for March.

The chairman, Harmoko, said he believed President Suharto had the trust of the Indonesian people.

His statement follows calls by two prominent Muslim leaders for President Suharto to stand down to allow someone else to lead the country through its economic crisis.

Correspondents say President Suharto is comingunder unprecedented pressure to step down.
