The Tutsi-led army in Burundi says it killed more than 50 Hutu rebels in clashes near the capital, Bujumbura, at the weekend.
During the fighting troops pounded rebel positions around the village of Nyambuye, east of the capital.
A military spokesman said two soldiers were killed, and operations to flush out rebels were continuing.
BBC East Africa correspondent says the Tutsi-dominated authorities appear to be making an urgent and determined effort to control the rebel activity which has brought the war to the doorstep of the capital.
On New Years day more than 280 were killed, many of them Hutu villagers, after Hutu rebels attacked a military base close to Bujumbura's airport.
A spokesman for the World Food Programme said the organisation
hoped to deliver aid soon, to some 9000 people who had returned to
Rukaramu, the village where the earlier massacre occurred.
