Violence in Pakistan over graveyard killings

There were violent demonstrations by thousands of people in the Pakistani city of Lahore before the funerals of more than twenty Shi'ite Muslims.

They'd died on Sunday in a gun attack at a graveyard.

The protesters, mostly supporters of an extremist Shi'ite group, ransacked the Lahore municipal offices and set other public buildings and scores of cars ablaze.

Riot police fired in the air and discharged tear gas to disperse them.

More than thirty people were injured.

A message to news organisations said a Sunni Muslim militant group, Warriors of Jhangvi had carried out the graveyard attack, and warned of more to come.

More than one-hundred and forty people died last year in a wave of sectarian killings in Punjab province involving militant groups from the Sunni and the minority Shi'ite Muslim communities.
