Hundreds of women set free after Colombian jail mutiny
A protest by more than a thousand prisoners at a jail in Colombia has ended peacefully with the departure of some five hundred family members who'd been visiting them. The inmates allowed their relatives -- mainly women -- to leave the prison in the city of Popayan after securing promises from the authorities that some of their demands would be met. These included measures to relieve serious overcrowding, improved access to drinking water and better medical care. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
