New warning to Zimbabwean whites

A Zimbabwean cabinet minister has accused some of the country's white businessmen of trying to cause anti-government unrest by increasing prices.

The information minister, Chen Chimutengwende, told the Sunday Mail newspaper that the government might be forced to reintroduce price controls, which were dropped as part of moves towards a market economy.

He alleged the businessmen were retaliating for government plans to takeover some white-owned farms.

Many manufacturers and retailers have raised prices sharply this month, blaming the steep fall in the Zimbabwe dollar.
