Gunmen kill Shi'ites in Pakistan graveyard

Police in Pakistan are hunting gunmen who killed twenty-two people and injured another thirty-five when they opened fire on Shi'ite Muslims at a graveyard in the city of Lahore.

The prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, called the incident an inhuman act.

Witnesses said three gunmen fired on mourners with automatic weapons for several minutes.

A BBC correspondent in Islamabad says the attack has shaken all of Pakistan.

No-one has admitted responsibility for the killings; previous attacks have been blamed on militant Sunni Muslim groups.

More than one-hundred and forty people died last year in a wave of sectarian killings in Punjab province involving militant groups from the Sunni and the minority Shi'ite Muslim communities.
