Cholera spreading in East Africa

Further deaths have been reported from cerebral malaria and cholera in East Africa.

A Somali radio station said that in under two weeks, more than one hundred people in the western Hiran region had died of cerebral malaria, and thirty-eight from cholera.

It appealed for emergency medical aid.

The radio, linked to one of the main faction leaders, Ali Mahdi Mohammed, said that more than a hundred cases of cholera were being reported each day, mainly in the capital, Mogadishu. In Kenya, the authorities say cholera has spread to both the north and south of the country.

Reports from Djibouti say the disease has spread south of the capital.

Tanzania and Uganda have also been hit by the epidemic, which was triggered by heavy rains and poor sanitation.
