Cholera spreads to north, south Kenya
An outbreak of cholera has spread to the north and south of Kenya, Kenyan radio reported on Saturday. Nine people have died of cholera in Machakos, southeast of Nairobi, and a health official said public eating places had been closed down as a result. The official said public meetings would be launched to reinforce health education to curb the disease. Five people also died from cholera in northern Kenya's Moyale district last week and 25 others have been admitted to the district hospital, the radio said. BBC Monitoring (http://www.monitor.bbc.co.uk), based in Caversham in southern England, selects and translates information from radio, television, press, news agencies and the Internet from 150 countries in more than 70 languages. |
