Army reshuffle in Rwanda

The Rwandan government has carried out a reshuffle of senior military posts in what correspondents see as an effort to improve its record in the war against Hutu rebels.

Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Habyarimana has been appointed minister of state in charge of defence, a new cabinet post.

He is the highest-ranking member of the former mainly Hutu army to join the Tutsi-led government.

Lieutenant Colonel Kayumba Nyamwasa -- who has led operations against the rebels in the north-west of the country -- is the new Army Chief of Staff replacing Colonel Sam Kaka). (Correspondents say Lieutenant Colonel Nyamwasa is regarded as one of the more capable army commanders in Rwanda.
