OAU mission calls for end to Burundi sanctions

The head of an OAU mission to Burundi has called for the scrapping of sanctions against the country.

The mission leader, T.A.G. Makombe of Zimbabwe, said there had been progress on the path to internal peace and he did not believe there was any reason to maintain sanctions, which were imposed by neighbouring countries after the military coup eighteen mnths ago.

The delegation is trying to resolve the rift between Burundi and Tanzania following border clashes.

Mr Makombe said the delegation would now go to Tanzania and he believed the situation could improve greatly.
