Kenyan anthropologist Richard Leakey to be MP

The renowned Kenyan anthropologist and conservationist, Richard Leakey, is being nominated as an MP in the new parliament by the opposition Safina party he leads.

Political parties are entitled to nominate extra MPs in proportion to the number of parliamentary seats they won in the general election.

Safina won five seats and is entitled to nominate an extra MP.

President Moi must endorse all nominees.

Mr Leakey, who is white, is a third-generation Kenyan of British descent.

The authorities only allowed Safina to register as a political party last month, three years after it applied.
