Tanzania appeals for lifting of EU fish ban

Tanzania has criticised a ban on fish from East Africa imposed by the European Union.

The minister for natural resources and tourism, Zakia Meghji, expressed surprise at the move, which was imposed for health reasons because of the cholera epidemic.

She said Tanzania had met the EU requirements and the ban would cause serious hardship if it was not lifted.

In Kenya, there are fears that the ban could cause the collapse of the fish industry.
