Tony Blair in Tokyo
The British prime minister, Tony Blair, on a five-day visit to Japan, has warned that the economic crisis in the Far East could overwhelm Japan and other Asian economies unless they implement serious reform. Mr Blair urged them not to return to protectionism and nationalism in response to the crisis. Mr Blair, on his first visit to Japan since becoming prime minister, welcomed plans by the Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota, to increase its investment in Britain, saying the country presented great opportunities. But the BBC Tokyo correspondent says Mr Blair has to assure Japanese business that London remains committed to Europe. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
