Post-war Liberia starts reorganising army

The Liberian government has begun the reorganisation of the country's armed forces.

The BBC West Africa correspondent says several thousands of troops and their families are being moved out of the capital Monrovia to provincial barracks.

President Charles Taylor wants to cut to six thousand the Armed Forces of Liberia which became a faction during the seven year civil war and doubled in size.

But our correspondent says the government's reorganisation of the army remains a sensitive issue: it is opposed by the West African peacekeeping force, which says it is supposed to train and reform Liberia's armed forces.
