If you feel you don't have enough buttons on your dashboard already...

The Clarion AutoPC is a $1,299 computer which fits in the dashboard of your car and understands more than 200 voice commands.

When it goes on sale in America this spring it will come with a navigation system that will calculate your route beween two points and guide you to your destination.

When used with a global positioning system it will know where the car is at all times and adjust its directions accordingly.

It will also contain a contacts database for hands-free telephone dialling and allow you to control its built-in radio and CD player using voice commands.

If you purchase a cellular modem you will be able to receive e-mail and pager messages and have them read out to you as you drive.

Microsoft, which has produced the device's software, is encouraging car manufacturers to offer it as an option on new vehicles, but because of the time it takes to change car models, it will probably not be available as a standard option until after the millennium.

Clarion's UK office was unable to say when it would be available in Europe.
