Historic US base handed over to Panama

The United States has handed over control of its historic Quarry Heights base in Panama -- until three months ago the headquarters of the US military in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The handover is part of a process leading up to the transfer of all American military facilities in Panama before the year 2000.

The Panama Canal is due to come under full Panamanian control at the same time.
