Former Somoza airstrip to boost Nicaraguan tourism industry
The Nicaraguan government has opened a new international airport on the site of the airstrip which once served a beachfront estate owned by the ousted dictator, Anastasio Somoza. The new terminal at Montelimar, on the Pacific Ocean, is part of the government's attempts to boost the Nicaraguan tourism industry. President Somoza flew into exile during the revolution which brought the left-wing Sandinistas to power in 1979, and was later assassinated in Paraguay. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
