Bangladesh police hold Assamese separatist

Police in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, have confirmed that they have arrested one of the leaders of a separatist group based in the north-east Indian state of Assam.

The police said Golap Barua who's also known as Anup Chetia was arrested two weeks ago for entering Bangladesh on a false passport.

Two of his associates Babul Sharma and Lakshmiprasad Goswami were also detained.

The outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam, ULFA, had staged protests in India calling for the release of Mr Barua, who is the organisation's general secretary.
